Hair, Makeup & Getting Ready

The little details matter, but you don't need to completely transform yourself for your photos. The goal is to feel like the best, most comfortable version of you—not like someone else.

Hair

If you're having your hair professionally styled, I recommend scheduling it with enough time to spare so you aren't rushing to your session.

Whether you wear it down, up, curled, braided, or completely natural, choose something that feels like you. If you're planning to wear your hair down, a little extra volume and movement can photograph beautifully outdoors.

And don't stress over every little flyaway. Real hair moves, and that's okay!

Makeup

If you're comfortable wearing makeup, I generally recommend going just a little more polished than your everyday look. Camera-ready makeup doesn't have to mean heavy makeup.

A few things to keep in mind:

  • Choose makeup that makes you feel confident and like yourself.

  • Bring your lipstick, gloss, or other essentials for quick touch-ups.

  • If you're prone to shine, a little translucent powder can be helpful.

  • If you're having your makeup professionally done, allow plenty of time afterward so you aren't rushing to your session.

And if makeup isn't your thing? That's completely okay. You don't need it to have beautiful photographs.

Give Yourself Time

One of the best things you can do for yourself on session day is not rush.

Give yourself plenty of time to get dressed, do your hair and makeup, gather your things, and get to our location. A calm beginning makes it much easier to relax once we're in front of the camera.

If you're photographing your family, try to give yourself even more time than you think you'll need. Kids have a special talent for making a five-minute task take twenty minutes. 😉

A Few Last-Minute Details

Before you walk out the door, take a quick look for the little things that are easy to forget:

  • Hairbrush or comb

  • Lipstick or gloss for touch-ups

  • Powder or other makeup essentials

  • Deodorant

  • Clean nails if your hands will be featured

  • Remove hair ties from wrists

  • Check for clothing tags, wrinkles, or lint

  • Bring any necessary personal items

And Then... Let It Go

Once you arrive, you don't need to worry about every little detail anymore.

Your hair doesn't have to stay perfectly in place. Your makeup doesn't have to be flawless. Your kids don't have to look perfect every second.

Things move. Hair blows. Dresses wrinkle. Kids get messy. And honestly? Those little imperfect moments are often what make your photographs feel real.

Come as you are, take a breath, and enjoy the people you're with. I'll take care of the rest. 🤍
